శ్రీవైకుంఠం

PANDYA NADU · THOOTHUKUDI, TAMIL NADU

Srivaikuntam is traditionally enumerated as number 47 among the 108 Divya Desams — the sacred abodes of Sri Maha Vishnu sung by the Alvars.

This is one of the Nava Tirupathi divya desas of Pandy | Nadu. It is on the Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur Railway line, It lieg on the northern banks of Porunai river. It is about 2 miles away from Alvar Thirunagari, the birth place of Nam malwar, As the | town is criss crossed with the river and the channels and there are also a number of tanks in and around this area, the holy place is full of luscious paddy fields. It gives one an impression | as if it lies in Tanjore District which is the grannery of Tamil © Nadu and not in the drought prone Tirunelveli District.

The moolavar here is known as Vaikuntanatha. The ut. | savar is known as Kallapiran. Perumal appeared to Somukhan, | Indra and Brahma. The moolavar is seen in a standing posture | and is facing east. He holds a mace in His hand. Adisesha is | seen with His hood spread out like an umbrella over the head of the moolavar. The garbagriha of the moolavar is placed in quite | some depth in the temple, but yet one inexplicable feature is | that every year on one day during Uttarayanam, Dakshinayanam in the month of Chithirai (April-May) and Ippasi (Oct- Nov.) the rays of the Sun fall directly on the idol of the moolavar. The moolavar idol is believed to be made out of Saligramam. Everyday abisheka is done for the moolavar with milk. The utsavamurthi is seen along with Bhoomidevi, He is known as | Choranathar or Kallapiran. He is also seen holding a mace in His hand. Thayar here is known as Vaikuntavalli as also Choranayaki. These two vigrahas are also made out of Saligramam. The Vimanam is known as Chandra Vimanam. The theerthams are known as Brighu theertham, Kalasa theertham and Tambaraparani river, The sthala purana of this place was related by Sutha muni to other munis like Parasara, Gowthama,

Bharadwaja, Vasishta:etc. in Naimisaranya forest.

There are three interesting stories relating to the sthala purana of this divya desa. The first one will explain how the place got the name of Sri Vaikuntam. Once upon a time there was a pralayam in Brahmaloka. Lord Brahma was lost in deep sleep. At that time, an asura by name Somukhan stole the vedas from Lord Brahma. When Brahma woke up, he realised |
