Thiruvilliputhur is traditionally enumerated as number 46 among the 108 Divya Desams — the sacred abodes of Sri Maha Vishnu sung by the Alvars.
Srivilliputtur is situated in the heart of the ancient land of the Pandyan kings i.e. the present Ramnad district of Madras State. The town is an ancient and legendary town. The Western Ghats with its thick green forests is to the west of this town. There are mountain ranges to the north and southwest of the town. Adjoining the town there is a thick grove full of shenbaga trees. It is known as 'Shenbaga thoppu'. This town is the birth place of the great saint Perialwar and his still greater foster daughter Andal. It can be reached by train. The railway station with the same name is on the main line that connects Madras to Trivandrum. It is about 26 miles down from Virudhunagar junction. It can also be reached by road as it is on the main trunk Road.
The emblem of the Tamil Nadu Government is the temple tower of the Vathapatra sayee Perumal at Srivilliputtur, The pilgrims who enter the town, be it by train or by bus can see the imposing temple tower beckoning them even from a distance.
A number of famous persons lived in this town. Manduka Maharishi also known as Sikappa muniver stayed in this place. Goraka maharishi, a famous siddar also lived here. This maharishi spent a great part of his life in Srivilliputtur and in the forests in Azhagar hill nearby. The medical book written by him in Tamil is known as ’Gorakar vaippu'. He has also Written another famous book dealing with herbs. In this town was born Thirugnanasanbandar who established the Saiva Siddhantha Gnana peetam as well as the Dharumapura Adheenam in Thanjavur district. Some of the other famous persons who lived in this place are Ponnayira swamigal, Sivaprakasa swamigal, Arumuga Thambiran swamy, Kailasasundara swami, Muktanandha swami, Mounaguru Sankaranandha swami etc. Each of these swamis has a separate temple in this town where nitya Poojas are performed. A famous exponent of vaishnavite traditions by name Sri Vedapiran Bhattar held this place in such reverence as it was the birth place of Perialwar and Andal, that
