Thirumalirunsolai is traditionally enumerated as number 43 among the 108 Divya Desams — the sacred abodes of Sri Maha Vishnu sung by the Alvars.
This divya desam is in Madurai city itself very near the bus stand. Madurai is an important junction in the South. ern Railway. As such approach to this divya desam ig very easy. The moolavar is known as Koodal Azhagar. He is seen in a sitting posture facing east. Thayar is known as Mady. ravalli. She has a separate sannidhi. She is also known аҙ Vakulavalli, Varagunavalli, Maragatha vali. The theerthams are Hema pushkarini,Chakra theertham, Hruthamala river ang Vaigai river. The vimanam is Ashtanga vimanam. God appeared to Brighu maharishi, Sounaka maharishi and Perialwar. Thig place is famous as the place where Perialwar composed his Thiruppallandu and sang in praise of the Lord when He ap. peared before him.
Everybody is aware of the river Vaigai flowing near Madurai. But in the puranas and in the Sangam age literature, it is evident that this river was flowing as two rivers and encircling Madurai in the form of a garland. One part of that river was known as Kiruthamalai. This was flowing near the Koodal Azhagar Koil. On both sides of the Kirutha malai there were plenty of plantain trees and hence the area itself was known as Kadali vanam. In the midst of that kadalivanam was situated the Koodal Azhagar koil. Till recently this Kirutha malai nadhi was having plenty of flow of water; it was a wide river. Some people even believe that Kirutha malai river is older than and more holy than Vaigai. Koodar puranam explains as to how this river was named as Kirutha malai.
This means that Vegavathi was the river which flowed fast. When God took the form of Thirivikrama and one of His feet covered Satyaloka and Brahma washed that feet and drops of water fell on earth and blessed this earth; the river was know? as Vaiyai. Vaiyai in Tamil means this earth, One branch of

The lines convey the meaning that this Perumal is aware of only the Vaigai river surrounding his fort like a garland. He is not aware of any enemy of His having surrounded His fort in the manner in which the river surrounds it. In brief, it means that the Vaigai river is encircling this temple.
