Thirumogur

Thirumogur is traditionally enumerated as number 44 among the 108 Divya Desams — the sacred abodes of Sri Maha Vishnu sung by the Alvars.

He is known as Kalamega Perumal i.e. Perumal with the hue of dark clouds. The place is also known as Mohanapuram.

Nammalwar the great Vaishnavite saint was so taken in by the beauty of Idol that he described the beauty of this Perumal in great detail in one of his pasurams. It is believed that it was this God who accompanied Nammalwar when his soul went to Vaikundam.

In this Nammalwar says that the divine feet of God viz., Thiruvadi is like a beautiful flower. The eyes are like lotuses. The mouth is of the colour of coral. The Perumal has four majestic shoulders. Just like the heavy rainbearing clouds who give the gift of water to the thirsty land, so also the Kalamega Perumal, it is firmly believed, showers His boundless compassion on His sincere devotees and accompanies such souls on their last journey before reaching the feet of the divine Lord. It is said that when Nammalwar had to perform that last journey this God instead of sending Garuda, Adhisesha or other nityasuris to accompany him, He Himself lighted the path. Thus, even if we sincerely worship this God, He will be our guide for the last journey. Some people question as to how Nammalwar could describe the beauty of the Lord in such a telling manner when God led the way and naturally would have been having His back towards Nainmalwar, Nampillai, a commentator explains this fact very beautifully when he says that the God who was leading the way for the sake of this one jeevathma, wanted to ensure that the athma faithfully followed him and did not get distracted enroute and lose its way. So Perumal used to turn His head now and then to ensure the progress of that great jecvathma.! Thus, Nammalwar had a chance to be blessed by the darshan of the Lord’s face on his way to salvation and was able to describe in detail the beauty of the shoulders, the body, eyes, mouth, of Perumal. Thus savouring and enjoying to the full, the sight of the Perumal, The athma of Nammalwar followed Perumal. ammalwar describes in his Thiruvoimozhi in ten pasurams the Perumal of this divya desam as also the theertham, the fields. the town, the people living in the town, the mandapam. It is quite interesting to recall here the ten names with which ^mmalwar describes the Perumal.
