Thiruppuliangudi

Thiruppuliangudi is traditionally enumerated as number 49 among the 108 Divya Desams — the sacred abodes of Sri Maha Vishnu sung by the Alvars.

This is the third in the Nave Tirupathis of Pandya Nagy It is on the northern banks of Tamabaraparani river and abou one mile to the north of Veragunamangai. The Perumal her is known ав Kaisina Vendhan, 88 п lar. б yar ig known ав Malarmakal Nachiyar and Pulingudivalli. The theertham is Varuna theertham. Vimanam is Vedasara m"manam. He appeared to the King of Dharmapura, Visuvasakay, The moolavar is seen facing east in а bhujanga sayana pose. The Alvar referred to these first three Tirupathis and said that the Perumal who is seen in a standing posture at Sri Vaikuntam, is seen in a sitting posture at Natham and is in a lying down posture at Thiruppulingudi.

The sthala purana of this place was told by Sanaka rishi t; the King of Dharmapura Visuvasakan by name. It is said that once upon а time, Perumal and Thayar seated on Garuda were flying in the sky.. They were attracted by the beautiful scenic scene on the banks of Tambaraparani. They both descended to have a close look. They were captivated by the beauty of the flow of water surrounded by the luscious green fields, birds twittering, calm and cool and peaceful atmoshphere. Perumal and Mahalakshmi stayed on there enjoying the place. Bhoomidevi, it is alleged, got annoyed and jealous as she was not with Perumal. Out of disgust and frustration she is said to have left Vaikuntam in a huff to Pathala loka. When she, who is the sustenance of earth, water and all living things, left, the world got enveloped in darkness. The living creatures were gasping for breath. The devas who saw this rushed to Perumal and pleaded with him. Baghavan understood all that had happened. He and Lakshmi devi thayar went to Pathala loka, searched for Bhoomidevi and brought Her also to the place of scenic splendour on the banks of Tambaraparani river. God and the two thayars stayed in this place known as Thiruppulingudi for some time. As God brought Bhoomidevi to this place, it came to be known as Bhoomipalans

kshetram. Perumal came to be known as Bhoomi paler, Bhoomi palar is а Sanskrit word. The same translated in Tamil stands for Kai Sina Vendhan.
