Thiruvidavendai is traditionally enumerated as number 81 among the 108 Divya Desams — the sacred abodes of Sri Maha Vishnu sung by the Alvars.
This divya kshetram Thiruvidaventhai is on the road to Mahabalipuram, and about fortryone kms. from Madras. The village wherein the temple is located is very small, but it is situated amidst beautiful surroundings. On one side, there is the sea shore while on another side there are plenty of casuarnia trees, mango grooves, etc. There is also a small tank. The temple does not have a Rajagopuram but the village is very inviting and peaceful. The Utsavamurti is known as Nitya Kalyana Perumal. The moolavar is known as Sri Lakshmi Adi Varahaswamy. The moolavar is about nine feet in height. Thirumangai Alvar is the only Alvar who has sung in praise of this deity. The. Lord here is also known as Gnanapiran. The idol is in a very unusual form with Lord Vishnu in the form of a boar (Varaha). ‘The right foot is firmly planted on the ground and the left foot is raised upto the knee and is placed on the head of Adisesha. The consort Bhoomidevi is resting on the thigh of the Lord. It is stated that we cannot see God in this Form in any other temple. As the consort is resting on His left thigh the place has been called Thiru (holy prefix) Ida Yenthai (left side). In course of time it has been corrupted as Thiruvidaventhai and later Thiruvedanthai. In Mahabalipuram also, there is a temple for Lord Varaha Murti. However, there, the consort is on the right hand side of the Lord and that is why Mahabalipuram is also known as Thiruvalaventhai (Thiru (holy prefix) Valaventhai (right hand side).

ఒక్కొక్క దినమున స్వామి వివాహమాడుటచే ఆయనకు నిత్యకల్యాణర్ అనిపేరు
వచ్చినది. ఈ మూడువందల అరువది కన్యలను కలపి ఒకే కన్యగాచేసి స్వామి తనకు
ఎడమవె పున ధరించుటచే ఈక్షేతమునకు తిరువిడ్షన్హై అనియు, తాయార్లకు
అఖిలవల్లి అనియు పేరువచ్చెను. ఇచట మూలవర్ తిరుమేనిలో లక్ష్మీదేవి ఎడమ
(ఇడదు) భాగమున ఉండుటచే 'ఇడవెన్సై' అని పేరువచ్చెను.
సము దతీర క్షే తమగుబచే సౌకర్యములు స్వల్పము.
మార్గముః మహాబలిపురమునకు 10 కి.మి. దూరమున కలదు.

ఇది పూదత్తాళ్వార్ అవతరించిన స్థలము. ఆళ్వార్లు మంగళాశాసనం చేసిన
సన్నిధి శిధిలమై . సము ద్రతీరమున కలదు. ఇది శిధిలముకాగా కొంత దూరములో
మరియొక సన్నిధిని నిర్మించారు. స్వామి స్టలశయనముగా సేవసాయించు న్ష్మతము
ఇదియొక్కటియే.
పుండరీకమవార్షి తామర పుష్పములతో స్వామిని అర్చింపబోయెనట.
- అసమయమున స్వామి ఒక వృద్ద బ్రా్మాణుని రూపముతోవచ్చి ఆకలిగానున్నది.
ఆహారమునీయుమని అడిగెను. అంతట పుండరీకుడు ఆహారమును తీసికొని
వచ్చుటకు వెడలెను. ఇంతలో స్వామి ఆ తామరపుష్పములను అలంకరించుకొని
పుండరీకమహర్షి తలచిన రూపముతో శయినించెను. మహర్షి తిరిగివచ్చి స్వామిని
సేవించి ఆశ్చర్యపడి వారిని స్టలశయనర్ అని సంబోధించిరి.
ఈ క్షే తమునగల జ్ఞానప్పిరాన్ (వరాహస్వామి) సన్నిధి తప్పక సేవింపవలెను.
ఇచటస్వామి తిరుమేనిలో తాయార్లు కుడివె పున ఉండుటచే ఈసన్నిధికి వలనెన్తా
అనిపెరు.
ఇది అతిమనోహరములై న్ శెల్పనంపదలో అలరారు క్షేతము.
తిరుమంగె ఆళ్వారు ఈక్షే తస్వామిని కీర్తించుచుండ తిన్టనూర్ భక్తవత్సలస్వామి
(పత్యక్షముకాగా వారికిని ఇచటీ నుండియే మంగళాశాసనం చేసిరి.
