Thirukulandai is traditionally enumerated as number 51 among the 108 Divya Desams — the sacred abodes of Sri Maha Vishnu sung by the Alvars.

This is one among the Nava Tirupathis of Pandya Nadu. It lies about 7 miles to the north-east of Sri Vaikuntam. It also lies on the northern banks of Tambaraparani river. The Perumal in this place is known as Vengatavanan. The utsavar is known as Mayakoothan. Thayar is known as Alarmelvalli, Kulandhai valli. The vimanam із Anandha nilaya vimanam. Theerthan is Perungulam. God appeared to Bruhaspathi. The moolavar is seen in a standing posture.

At Thataka vanam near Thulai villi mangalam, a brahmin by name Vedasaran lived. His wife was Kumuda valli. They had no children. In response to their sincere prayers, after a long time, God blessed them with a girl. They named her Kamalavathi. Even when she was five years old, Kamalavathi was expressing her desire to marry none other than Perumal Himself. The parents and the other people tried to dissuade her. But she was very adament. She undertook a severe penance. God appeared and asked her as to why at such an young age, she had taken up a severe penance. Kamalavathi replied that she wished to marry only Lord Narayana and that her people were trying to prevent her from achieving her wish. Perumal then revealed His true form to her. He is said to have taken her and placed her along with Kousthuba mani on His chest. As this town was the place where the young girl did tapas the place came to be known a Balika vanam i.e. young girls’ forest.

Vedasaran and his wife Kumudavalli had other children. They continued to be living in Thirukulandhai. One day Kumudavalli went to have her bath at the tank. At that time, a demon by name Asamsaran kidnapped her. It is said that this demon had vowed to marry 1000 women. He was living in one of the caves of the Himalayas. He had already married 998 women. Kumudavalli was the 999th woman. He hid her in the cave and Went out in search of the 1000th lady. ‘Meantime Vadasaran came to know about the abduction of his wife. He went and Offered prayers to Perumal and requested him to restore his wife to him, Baghavan got on to Garuda, went to Himalayas, found Kumudavalli hidden in a cave and brought her back to
