What is a Panchangam?
Pañcāṅgam literally means “five-limbed”: it is the Vedic almanac that records, for every day of the year, the five sacred timekeeping elements that govern auspicious activity.
Tithi
lunar day — 30 per month
Nakshatra
lunar mansion — 27 in the zodiac
Yoga
sun-moon longitude alignment — 27 yogas
Karana
half a tithi — 11 distinct karanas
Vara
weekday, ruled by one of the seven planets
“Every sacred undertaking begins by consulting the panchangam — that the act may be aligned with cosmic time.”
