The Vaikuntha Gadya — the discourse delivered by Bhagavad Ra:ma:nuja muni, the teacher of all the secrets of the Ve:da:ntha, whose splendor is the bliss of meditation on the lotus feet of Ya:muna muni, to His own disciples. Having placed his head upon the lotus feet of Yathi:ndra — the supreme teacher, the treasury of unblemished knowledge and dispassion, in whom every veil has been entirely stilled — let the disciple, fit by the endless transgressions running from beginningless time to be plunged into the hells, helpless and without other recourse, meditate thus. Let him reach to Sri:man Na:ra:yana, the Lord of Vaikuntha — to that supreme Sri: Vaikuntha-loka endowed with the six characteristic marks of the eternal abode, full of infinite bliss, of unlimited and surpassing sovereignty, self-luminous, exceeding every other splendor, served by countless myriads of Nithyasu:ris with bodies divine and non-material, attended together with Sri:, Bhu:, and Ni:lia:. There, for the attainment of the all-complete kainkaryam, let him take refuge at the pair of His lotus feet. Having contemplated thus, contemplating also his own nature as one whose whole being is the eternal subordinate of the Supreme Person, whose every activity and abstention is under His sole control, who has the experience of Him alone as his only enjoyment — uttering 'I take refuge at His lotus feet,' the one who has thus performed prapatti shall be one whose single aspiration is the service of Him, whose single enjoyment is the service of Him, whose single love is for Him.
Meaning
The Vaikuntha Gadya is the third and concluding prose composition of Ra:ma:nuja's Gadya Trayam — a sustained meditation on the supreme abode and the eternal kainkaryam awaiting the soul that has surrendered. The opening passage establishes the lineage and the disposition: the discourse is given by Ra:ma:nuja, whose own bliss is the contemplation of his a:cha:rya Ya:muna's lotus feet, and the disciple is instructed to receive it with his head bowed at the feet of the de:sika, having confessed his unworthiness (akincanathva, ananya-gatikatva). What follows is the central anusandha:na — the contemplative reaching of the prapanna toward the goal. Vaikuntha is named as shad-vidha-linga-upeta, possessed of the six marks the Pa:nchara:thra tradition assigns to the supreme abode: full of infinite a:nanda, of unbounded aisvarya, self-luminous, exceeding every other splendor, served by the Nithyasu:ris in their non-material divine bodies, and — most importantly for the Mother's place in the Samprada:ya — sriya: bhu:mya: ni:liaya: ca sahitam: attended together with Sri:, Bhu:, and Ni:lia:. The doctrinal weight of this phrase cannot be overstated. Liberation, for Ra:ma:nuja, is not the dissolution of the self into an undifferentiated absolute; it is eternal participation of the soul in the kainkaryam offered to the Divine Couple, with the Mother centrally present, never absent, never apart from the Lord even at the consummation of the journey. The closing of the opening prose names the inner disposition of the freed soul: tat-kainkarya-eka-manoratha, tat-kainkarya-eka-bhoga, tad-eka-pri:thi — a soul whose single aspiration, single enjoyment, and single love is the service of the Lord. This is contemplated by the prapanna during the antima-smrithi at the close of life. The complete prose of the Vaikuntha Gadya extends well beyond this opening, ascending through detailed description of the divine throne, the assembled Nithyasu:ris, and the soul's reception into the Lord's presence — that fuller text is pending samprada:ya scholar verification before being rendered here.
