Gadya Trayam — opening prose section of the Sarana:gathi Gadya

Sarana:gathi Gadya — Lakshmi: invocation

शरणागतिगद्यम् — श्रीदेव्यभ्यर्थनम्

Bhagavad Sri: Ra:ma:nuja:cha:rya·12th century CE·1 verse·Recited daily by Sri:vaishnavas as part of the Pa:nchaka:la observance; on Pa:nguni Uttiram at every Dhivyadhesa; before formal prapatti at the feet of an a:cha:rya; on the Thirunakshathram of Bhagavad Ra:ma:nuja

The most foundational text of the purushaka:ra doctrine in the entire Samprada:ya. Bhagavad Sri: Ra:ma:nuja:cha:rya opens His Sarana:gathi Gadya — the supreme prose statement of prapatti — by addressing Sri: Maha:lakshmi: first, performing surrender at Her feet before turning to address the Lord. The Samprada:ya's central teaching that no soul approaches the Lord except through the mediation of Sri: is established here in Ra:ma:nuja's own hand, in continuous prose rather than metrical verse.

The opening prose section of Bhagavad Sri: Ra:ma:nuja:cha:rya's Sarana:gathi Gadya is the single most foundational text of the purushaka:ra doctrine in the entire Samprada:ya. Before addressing Sri:man Na:ra:yana — before composing a single syllable to the Lord at whose feet He is about to perform prapatti — Ra:ma:nuja turns first to Sri: Maha:lakshmi:. He invokes Her as akhilajaganma:tharam (the Mother of all the worlds), as asmanma:tharam (our Mother), as the one ananyasaranyam who alone is the unfailing refuge. He pleads with Her to mediate his surrender to the Lord, that the Lord — by Her recommendation — may accept the prapatti.

This is the foundational scene of the Samprada:ya's central teaching. The purushaka:ra doctrine — that no soul approaches the Lord except through Sri:'s mediation — is not an abstract philosophical claim but a lived enactment that Ra:ma:nuja Himself performs at the opening of His most sacred prose work. Every Sri:vaishnava who recites the Gadya Trayam in the Pa:ngkuni Uttiram observance, every disciple who performs prapatti at the feet of an a:cha:rya, reenacts this surrender to the Mother first. The opening prose section is treated as a single continuous unit — one extended sarana:gathi uttered to Sri: — rather than as metrical verses.

English

I, having no other refuge, take refuge in Thee — the Goddess Sri:, the Bhagavathi:, whose nature, form, qualities, sovereignty, lordship, and disposition correspond perfectly to those of Bhagava:n Na:ra:yana, dear to Him in every respect; possessed of an innumerable host of auspicious attributes infinite in their excellence; dwelling in the forest of lotuses; eternal, never departing from the Lord; without blemish; the divine consort of the God of gods; the Mother of all the worlds; our Mother; the refuge of those who have no other refuge. O Dhevi:, I — destitute of every spiritual virtue: of supreme devotion, of supreme knowledge, of the highest love, of the unbroken, ceaseless, ever-luminous, undistracted, motiveless contemplation of the Lord that is born of consummate love and that bears fruit as eternal kainkaryam fitting every state of the soul; destitute also of the means to those virtues — bhakti, the right knowledge that is its means, the correct practice that is its means, and the sa:ththvic disposition, faith, and the rest of the qualities of the self that accompany it; afflicted, on the contrary, with the boundless and insurmountable experience of the opposite knowledge, the opposite practice, the opposite life — bowing in disposition at the lotus pair of Thy feet, in order that I may rightly attain refuge at the lotus feet of the Lord, helpless among all helplessnesses, having no other resort, I take refuge in Thee, in Thee alone.

Meaning

This is the single most foundational text of the purushaka:ra doctrine in the Samprada:ya. Before Bhagavad Ra:ma:nuja addresses the Lord in His Sarana:gathi Gadya — before He composes a syllable to Sri:man Na:ra:yana at whose feet He is about to perform formal prapatti — He turns first to Sri: Maha:lakshmi: and surrenders to Her. The Mother is invoked here under four sustained registers: as the Bhagavathi: whose every attribute matches the Lord's (the doctrine of Her co-supremacy, sriyah pathih in His aspect and sriyah patheh pathih in Hers); as nithya:napa:yini:, never departing — the technical term that grounds the Samprada:ya's rejection of any moment when the Lord exists without Her; as akhila-jagan-ma:tha:, the Mother of every world; and as asaranya saranya:, the refuge of those who have no other refuge. The second paragraph is Ra:ma:nuja's confession of unfitness. He enumerates the spiritual goods he lacks — para-bhakti, para jna:na, parama-bhakti, the right means, the right knowledge, the right practice, even the sa:ththvic disposition that would accompany them — and the opposite goods he possesses in abundance: vipari:tha jna:na, vipari:tha kriya:, vipari:tha anubhava. Having confessed akincanathva (the absolute poverty of the soul) and ananya-gatikatva (having no other recourse), he asks the Mother to mediate — that by Her recommendation the Lord may accept the prapatti the soul cannot accomplish on its own. The Samprada:ya treats this opening as a single continuous prose unit — one extended sarana:gathi uttered to Sri: before the Bhagava:n vriththa:ntha begins. Every Sri:vaishnava who recites the Gadya Trayam on Pa:nguni Uttiram, every disciple who performs prapatti at the feet of an a:cha:rya, reenacts this scene: surrender to the Mother first, that the Father may receive the child.
