Ṛgveda Khila tradition, traditionally recited with Śrī Sūktam
Lakṣmī Sūktam
लक्ष्मीसूक्तम्
Vedic Ṛṣi tradition (traditional attribution)·Vedic (Khila of Ṛgveda)·8 verses·Daily morning sandhyā as companion to Śrī Sūktam; Friday Lakṣmī Pūjā; Varalakṣmī Vrata; Dīpāvalī Lakṣmī Pūjā
The traditional Vedic companion to Śrī Sūktam, invoking Lakṣmī as the bestower of prosperity, progeny, and the auspiciousness of the household. Where the Śrī Sūktam petitions Agni Jātavedas to bring the Goddess near, the Lakṣmī Sūktam addresses Her directly in Her plenary forms — as Mahālakṣmī, Dhanalakṣmī, Dhānyalakṣmī, and Santāna-lakṣmī.
The Lakṣmī Sūktam is the traditional Vedic companion to the Śrī Sūktam — eight ṛks preserved in the Khila tradition of the Ṛgveda and recited immediately after Śrī Sūktam in every formal Lakṣmī ārādhana of the Śrīvaiṣṇava Sampradāya. Where the Śrī Sūktam petitions Agni Jātavedas to bring the Goddess near, the Lakṣmī Sūktam turns to address Her directly, invoking Her in the plenary forms by which the tradition contemplates Her presence in the household — Mahālakṣmī as the supreme Mother, Dhanalakṣmī as the bestower of wealth, Dhānyalakṣmī as the giver of food and harvest, and Santāna-lakṣmī as the granter of progeny.
The doctrinal significance of this sūkta rests in its location within Vedic śruti itself. That the Veda preserves not one but two consecutive sūktas dedicated to Śrī establishes the supremacy of the Mother within the foundational scriptures of the Sampradāya. Every Pāñcarātra Āgama prescribes its recitation; every Śrīvaiṣṇava Ahnika manual places it among the daily mantras of the householder; and the puruṣakāra doctrine of Bhagavad Sri Rāmānujācārya — the teaching that no soul approaches the Lord except through Śrī's mediation — finds its Vedic foundation here.
