The Statue of Equality
Celebrating Sri Ramanujacharya’s 1000-year legacy of equality, compassion, and universal dignity.
“There is no high, there is no low. All souls are equal before the Divine.”
Sri Ramanujacharya: The Philosopher of Equality
Over a thousand years ago, in an era of rigid social hierarchy, one man dared to proclaim that every human being — regardless of birth, caste, or status — is equally beloved by God. That man was Sri Ramanujacharya (1017–1137 CE), a philosopher, reformer, and spiritual giant whose ideas changed the course of Indian civilization.
Born in Sriperumbudur, near modern-day Chennai, Ramanujacharya became the foremost proponent of Vishishtadvaita Vedanta — the philosophy of “qualified non-dualism.” While other schools taught that the individual soul is either identical to or entirely separate from God, Ramanujacharya taught a middle path: each soul is a unique, real, and precious part of the Divine whole, just as a wave is part of the ocean.
This was not merely abstract philosophy. Ramanujacharya drew a radical conclusion: if every soul is equally a part of God, then no human being can be considered inferior to another. He opened temple doors to all communities. He shared sacred mantras that had been restricted to the elite, declaring that divine knowledge belongs to everyone. He welcomed outcasts and reformers alike into his fold.
Vishishtadvaita: A Philosophy for Everyone
The beauty of Vishishtadvaita lies in its accessibility. You do not need to be a scholar to grasp its core truths:
God is Personal & Loving
The Divine is not a distant abstraction. God (Narayana/Vishnu) is a personal, compassionate being who cares for every soul and responds to sincere devotion.
Every Soul Matters
Each individual soul (jivatma) is real, eternal, and uniquely precious. The soul is a part of God, but retains its individuality — your identity is not dissolved but fulfilled in the Divine.
Surrender & Grace
Liberation comes through prapatti — sincere surrender to God’s grace. It is available to every person, not just the learned or the privileged. Devotion, not birth, is the qualification.
Service is Worship
Serving other beings is serving God, because all beings carry the Divine within. Compassionate action — feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, educating children — is the highest form of devotion.
“Equality is not just a principle —
it is a way of life.”

In 2022, a thousand-year dream was realized. Under the vision of HH Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji, the Statue of Equality was unveiled in Hyderabad, India — a monumental tribute to Sri Ramanujacharya and his timeless message of human dignity.
Standing at 216 feet (66 meters), it is the world’s second-tallest sitting statue, rising majestically from a lotus-shaped pedestal that houses a temple, museum, and meditation halls. The statue was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India in a ceremony attended by millions.

What makes the Statue of Equality extraordinary is not just its scale, but its meaning. Every element is designed to convey Ramanujacharya’s message:
- ✧ The 108 Divya Desam replicas surrounding the base represent the sacred Vishnu temples, recreated so pilgrims can experience them all in one place.
- ✧ The 120 kg gold statue inside the pedestal depicts Ramanujacharya in meditation — a reminder that true wealth is spiritual.
- ✧ The entire project was crowd-funded by devotees worldwide — no government money. $120 million raised through faith alone.
- ✧ The campus is open to all visitors, regardless of religion, caste, or nationality — embodying the very principle it celebrates.
A 1000-Year Legacy
A Message for All Faiths & All People
Ramanujacharya’s teaching of equality is not limited to any one religion. His core message — that every soul carries inherent, equal dignity — resonates across Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and secular humanism. It is a universal truth.
At JETNJ, we honor this legacy by welcoming every person who walks through our doors, regardless of background, belief, or tradition. Our programs, services, and worship are open to all. We believe that the path to a more just world begins with recognizing the sacred equality of every human being.
You do not need to be Hindu to be inspired by equality. You only need to be human.
